Solid Walls – How to achieve 0.18 U-value
How to achieve a 0.18 U-value for solid walls
Are you going through building regulations for an upcoming project? You’ve likely been asked to achieve a 0.18 U-value for your walls if you are seeking acceptance from building control. Hitting this figure can be straightforward, however, can be much more difficult with cost and space restraints.
U-values measure the level of heat transfer through a structure. It is a sum of all the layer’s thermal R-values (thermal resistance) that makes up that part of the building. For example, a roof has a U-value, a window has a U-value, and so on.
Achieving a U-value is often crucial, as there is a minimum expectation to achieve building regulations.
The U-value target for 2024
The government has updated its Approved Document Part L about U-values, heat gain, and heat loss. The new target U-value came into play in June 2022. For more information on Part L follow the link on the UK government website – See Data Source.

There are many different terms and expressions used in the building trade, often relating to the same thing. Solid walls, often being branded as Dry Lining, include the following types of walls;
- Cavity wall – Brick and Block
- Concrete walls
- Block and Render walls
- Brick walls
The type of wall may affect the U-value achieved negatively or positively, for clarification, feel free to contact us or request a U-value.
